Beyond Charcoal – Advanced Management of Toxicities

This lecture has been RACE approved for 1.0 CE hour for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Program Description:

This lecture focuses on advanced management of toxicities including intravenous lipid emulsion therapy (ILE), pharmacological management of entero-hepatically recirculated toxins, as well as principles and indications for extracorporeal therapy in the management of toxicities.

Learning Objectives:

• Students will identify which advanced techniques are available in veterinary medicine
• Students will be able to identify patients who may benefit from advanced decontamination techniques
• Students will be able to differentiate which techniques may be most effective for each clinical situation
• Students will be aware of the common complications of extracorporeal therapy in toxicity management, be able to balance risk v benefit of these techniques and understand how to mitigate risk
