Destruction of the Great Luminal Barrier: Impact of Fluid Resuscitation

Course Details

This lecture has been RACE Approved for 1 CE hour for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

In this presentation, veterinarians will be introduced to the form and function of the endothelial glycocylyx, the great luminal barrier. After the brief physiologic review and updated review on the revised Starling’s equation we will discuss the impact of fluid resuscitation with various fluid types and the impact of fluid overload. The current literature from both veterinary and human medicine will be reviewed to assist the clinician in selecting the appropriate fluid type, resuscitation volume and rate to prevent destruction of the endothelial glycocalyx, avoid fluid overload, and decrease risk of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.
