Kidney Crisis: Nephrotoxins in the ER

Course Details

This lecture has been RACE approved for 1.0 CE hour for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Program Description:

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a life-threatening consequence of nephrotoxin exposure, requiring rapid identification and intervention. This course will explore the most significant renal toxins affecting companion animals, including grapes and raisins, ethylene glycol, NSAIDs, lilies, and envenomations.

Learners will gain an understanding of the mechanisms of toxicity, clinical signs, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based treatment strategies.

Through case-based discussions, we will review best practices for decontamination, fluid therapy, antidotal treatments, and long-term renal support. By the end of this session, participants will be better equipped to recognize nephrotoxic emergencies, implement timely interventions, and improve patient outcomes in veterinary emergency settings.

Lecture Agenda:

  • Introduction
  • Grape/Raisins
  • Ethylene glycol
  • NSAIDs
  • Lilium sp.
  • Venom Case Review

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn to identify common nephrotoxins and have a comprehensive understanding of the method of action (MOA). When participants recognize the clinical presentations, they should feel confident diagnosing, managing, treating, monitoring, and recovering these patients.
