Making the Most of Your Ultrasound Machine: Introduction to Knobology
Course Details
This lecture has been RACE approved for 1 CE hour for veterinarians and veterinary technicians
A lecture is given covering a review of basic ultrasound physics and image formation, probe selection, and the basic operator manipulated controls of the ultrasound machine (Gain, Time-Gain Compensation, Focal zone, Depth). The knobs of the ultrasound machine are then identified and reviewed with demonstration of control manipulation on a series of images. A second part is given on focused ultrasound techniques (modified FAST) and approach to the assessment of the thorax and abdomen in the canine and feline patient. Abdominal assessment focuses on a 4-quadrant approach Рcranial, left, caudal and right. This is performed with a patient in right lateral or dorsal recumbency. Thoracic assessment focused on a 5-step approach including subcostal, cranioventral and caudodorsal bilaterally. This is performed with a patient in sternal or lateral recumbency. Attendees will (1) gain a better understanding the ultrasound machine instrumentation (“knobs”) and how to manipulate to maximize image formation and resolution; (2) Become familiar with a modified FAST technique for triage assessment of the thorax and/or abdomen in a canine or feline patient.
