Management of the Difficult Airway

Program Description:

In this presentation, Dr. Reed discusses the tools and considerations of airway management in small animal patients. The attendee will learn how to prepare for and manage the patient with the difficult airway. Various approaches to the airway will be described including endotracheal intubation, supraglottic airway devices, blind insertion airway devices, guide tube intubation, endoscopy, retrograde intubation, pharyngostomy, and tracheostomy.

• After this lecture, the attendee will be able to describe the basic characteristics and use of an endotracheal tube and a laryngeal mask airway device.
• After this lecture, the attendee will be able to describe various techniques utilized to intubate patients with difficult airways.
• After this lecture, the attendee will understand how to safely exchange an endotracheal tube without losing the airway.
• After this lecture, the attendee will understand when and how to safely extubate patients.
