Perioperative Intravenous Fluids: Finding Balance
Course Details
This lecture has been RACE Approved for 1 CE hour for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Program Description:
Perioperative fluid administration has evolved as we have refined our understanding of the forces governing fluid distribution and become more concerned about the downsides of excessive fluid doses. However, blindly employing restrictive fluid regimens may also be detrimental. This lecture will discuss how to translate and apply updates in physiology to our patients in order to maximize clinical outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand basic fluid physiology and pharmacology.
- Appreciate recent updates in fluid physiology, including the revised Starling Equation and the role of the glycocalyx.
- Discuss tools for assessing intravascular volume & fluid responsiveness.
- Evaluate the literature surrounding perioperative fluid therapy and apply it.
