Course Details
This lecture has been RACE Approved for 1 CE hour of continuing education credit for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a life-threatening surgical emergency common in large breed dogs. This lecture will cover recognition, emergency stabilization, surgical intervention, and post-operative care, as well as a brief discussion of preventative strategies. This is a 50-minute lecture designed specifically for general practitioners and technicians. Recognizing and stabilizing GDV can be challenging and scary in the general practice setting. The goals of the lecture are to provide very practical and realistic goals in these situations. There will also be a brief discussion of recent literature that has explored risk factors for GDV compared to historical perceptions. Finally, the options for prophylactic gastropexy will be discussed so that general practitioners can provide accurate and up-to-date recommendations to owners of large breed dogs.
