Program Description:

This course reviews urinary obstructions in dogs and cats, common causes, treatment consideration and reviews how to unblock and place a urinary catheter on an emergent basis.  In addition, this course reviews how to perform a sacrococcygeal block in feline patients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be able to identify a patient with a urinary obstruction
  2. Review metabolic changes in a urinary obstruction to include systemic effects of hyperkalemia
  3. Appropriately select a urinary catheter for a patient and review the process of unblocking a feline urinary obstruction
  4. Outline steps of a sacrococcygeal block procedure
  5. Review treatment considerations for canine urolithiasis both medical and surgical indications
