Program Description:
This course reviews urinary obstructions in dogs and cats, common causes, treatment consideration and reviews how to unblock and place a urinary catheter on an emergent basis. In addition, this course reviews how to perform a sacrococcygeal block in feline patients.
Learning Objectives:
- Be able to identify a patient with a urinary obstruction
- Review metabolic changes in a urinary obstruction to include systemic effects of hyperkalemia
- Appropriately select a urinary catheter for a patient and review the process of unblocking a feline urinary obstruction
- Outline steps of a sacrococcygeal block procedure
- Review treatment considerations for canine urolithiasis both medical and surgical indications
